Abstract

One of the main function of a state is to maintain its order leading to its own internal peace. With many political conflicts and stating condition factors of insurgency, there are many situations which become factors effecting on the security of state. One of the main problems regarding to national security is drug criminal network. Drug cartel groups change its operation and motivation to create insurgency in order to control its territory by using domination and challenging the state with creating dual sovereignty and countering state officials with violence to gain legitimacy. This article presents a new type of insurgency, emerging in many countries especially in Latin America, known as criminal insurgency. Criminal insurgency is one of insurgency that has political and economic objectives. This type of insurgency will use the territorial control and create criminal zones with dual sovereignty, reduction of state’s legitimacy, and cultural adjustment. One of the countries that are facing with criminal insurgency is Mexico. In Mexico, criminal insurgency emerges as a result of drug trade problems and the expansion of power of drug cartels. By understanding the territorial control of drug trade zones, the use of violence against state’s officials and the cultural adjustment based from narco-culture reflects a clearer picture of security threat from organized crime against the state.
