Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to investigate (1) the socio-economic characteristics of farmers, (2) the production conditions, and (3) the farmers’ extension needs, problems, and suggestions related to the promotion of durian production. The population consisted of 557 durian farmers in Phrae Province, and a sample of 233 was determined using Yamane’s formula (1973) at the 0.05 error level. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed by descriptive statistics. The results revealed that 1) 61.80 percent of the farmers were male, with an average age of 56 years. A total of 39.50 percent had completed primary education, and 39.70 percent were members of farmer groups. The average farming experience was 10.39 years, with an average planting area of 10.01 rai and 7.06 rai of productive area. The average production cost was 12,519.10 baht per rai, and the average income from durian sales was 34,711 baht per rai. 2) Regarding production conditions, 59.40 percent of farmers grew the Monthong variety, with an average tree age of 9.31 years. About 69.30 percent of the farms were located on sloping land. Root rot disease was found in 39.40 percent of the farms, while thrips infestation occurred in 26.00 percent.3)The extension needs of market were at a high level, on issue water management, cultivation and maintenance, soil management, harvesting, and postharvest handling. The major problems were the lack of land ownership documents, insufficient production knowledge, and the absence of GAP certification. It was suggested that relevant agencies should consider issuing land title deeds, supporting farmer group formation, and providing training on durian production and GAP standards to enhance the quality and standards of durian production in Phrae Province
