Identity and Revitalization of Wooden Buddha Image’s Art Schools in Muang Nan District

Abstract
The objectives of this study were 1) to study the classic identities or styles of wooden Buddha image at Muang Nan District in Nan province 2) to study the revitalization practices of wooden at Muang Nan District, Nan province, and 3) to reproduce the buddha image prototypes. Scope of the research focused on exploring the Buddha images where they were kept in local temples and museum, and process of revive in the traditional merit making with construct cults of wooden Buddha images in contemporary culture. This research was documentary research about the Buddha image texts in Nan district, contemporary cultural theory; cultural capital, postcolonialism and postmodernism. A sample of case studies drawn from the observation of wooden Buddha images to categorize the styles based on appearances and basic iconography, using random sampling method in fieldwork. Moreover, the data collections were used in-dept interview with people who involve to wooden Buddha image crafting circle in Nan province.
The result of research found that the Buddha images in Muang Nan District can be divided in 4 styles: Nok Khak Tao, Phra Chao Fah, Pra Chao Song Kreng, and Wat Chiang Kaeng. These represented the cultural hybridity in postcolonialism. The revitalization practices of wooden Buddha images in contemporary culture occurred the cultural capital and tourism trend in globalization reproducing wooden Buddha images in the characteristic of postmodern aesthetic. Furthermore, the research also reproduced 4 prototypes of the classic wooden Buddha images from the study.
