DEVELOPMENT OF LEARNING ACTIVITY TO STRENGTHEN THE CITIZENSHIP CHARACTERISTICS IN A DEMOCRACY

Abstract

This research aimed to 1) study the opinions of teachers on the development
of democratic citizenship characteristics in educational institutions. 2) develop a set of learning activities in enhancing democratic citizenship characteristics and 3) study the results of using learning activities to enhance democratic citizenship characteristics of prathom suksa 3 - 6 students at Ban Rai School, Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai. The sample used for this research were 40 prathom suksa 3 - 6 students and 40 primary school teachers at Ban Rai School, Chiang Saen District Chiang Rai. The instrument used in this study was composed of a survey of teachers' opinions on the development of democratic citizenship characteristics in educational institutions, the developed learning activity series and the assessment form of democratic citizenship characteristic of learners. The data were analyzed by using mean (x̄), standard deviation (SD) and t-test dependent analysis.

          The research results were as follows:

1. 1. The teachers' opinions on the development of learners’democratic characteristics as a whole was 3.18, with the standard deviation of 0.66. In terms of environmental conservation, the average value was 3.53, categorized as the highest level.
2. 2. The developed learning activity package for enhancing student Democratic Citizenship Characteristics consisted of 6 units; Unit 1 Citizen role in conservation of the environment, Unit 2 Citizen cognitive awareness of media and news, Unit 3 Citizen morality, Unit 4 Citizen respect for the law, Unit 5 Citizen = public awareness and Unit 6 Citizens awareness of rights and duties. Each unit took a learning time of 3 hours, 18 hours in total.

The effect of using a learning activity package in enhancing Democratic Citizenship Characteristics of prathom suksa 3-6 students at Ban Rai School Chiang Saen District Chiang Rai Province had an average (x̄) equal to 2.56, categorized as a good level, with a standard deviation (SD) of 0.27. The result was statistically higher than before using learning activities at a level of .05 significances.
