The present study aimed 1) to investigate the retention of compassion in teaching profession of pre-service teachers majoring in early childhood education (ECE) a year later after participating in CREAM-based activities and 2) to explore the pre-service ECE teachers’ attitudes towards the effectiveness, suitability and application of the CREAM-based activities with regard to teaching compassion enhancement. A total of 30 second year pre-service ECE teachers at the Faculty of Education, Burapha University, Thailand, were selected as the participants of the study. The participants joined the CREAM-based activities when they were first year students. The tools used for data collection included 1) a self-evaluation questionnaire of retention of compassion in teaching profession towards four aspects (i.e., motivation for being an ECE teacher, awareness of prospective ECE teacher characteristics, goals of being a passionate ECE teacher, and self-development for being a passionate ECE teacher) and 2) a questionnaire on pre-service teachers’ attitudes towards the CREAM-based activities. Then the research data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and a content analysis.
The findings of the study showed that:
- After one year, the results of the participants’ self-evaluation showed that the retention of compassion in teaching profession of the ECE pre-service teachers still remained consistent across the four aspects at the highest level (m = 4.59, s = 0.56), when compared to the results of teaching compassion enhancement one week after the use of a set of CREAM-based activities in the first year at a high level (m = 4.28, s = 0.52).
2. The pre-service ECE teachers pointed out that the set of CREAM-based activities used was of great effectiveness and suitability in enhancing compassion in teaching profession, since it was well-designed and suitable for their context. They further recommended that such CREAM-based activities be included in the ECE curriculum for teacher identity development among ECE pre-service teachers.
