Abstract

The purposes of this research were: 1) to examine components of the Lai Khaen, 2) to establish the guidelines for developing the Lai Khaen, and 3) to follow up the development of the Lai Khaen of the students enrolling in music program at Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University. The research target group consisted of a researcher and 13 informants. The target group for development was 78 volunteer students. The content scope included Khaen (a Thai mouth organ made from varying lengths of bamboo bound together), and Lai Khaen (prototype of playing the Khaen). The research employed the action research (AR) comprising four stages: planning, action, observation and reflection. The 12 month-period of two spirals was carried out from October 1, 2018 to September 30, 2019. The research instruments for data collection were two copies of the moderately scheduled formal interviews and an observation form.

            The results revealed that:

1. The knowledge organization of the Lai Khaen consisted of: 1) Lai Sudsanan, 2) Lai Po, 3) Lai Soi,

 4) Lai Yai, and 5) Lai Noi.

1. The guidelines for developing the Lai Khaen of students in Music Program at Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University involved workshops, monitoring and supervision, and coaching.


2. The students developed their knowledge and understanding of the Lai Khaen which is the art of arranging sounds in various groups into the melodious sound using Khaen as a major music equipment. The students improved their two prototypes (Lai) of Khaen in a concrete, clear, effective and efficient form, namely Lai Poi-sai and Lai Yai.
