The Otherness of Development Discourse in Moken Society

This article aims to present an image of Thailand’s development on the modernity aspect that plunged into the country. This produces a developmental discourse influencing the social beliefs on the terminology “development" as a solid truth, even though underlying such development it is formed by the power of knowledge. Ultimately, the truth of development has established a different character from the periphery of the set of development discourse. It this article, the author has put forward the lifestyle and identity of the "Moken" tribe to analyze the movement of development ideology and its impact on development. Overwhelmed by development from the other, the Moken expresses a sense of alienation, voicelessness, and powerlessness in society as part of the process which diminishes human dignity. The author hopes that this article will help to liberate society from the paradigm of thought which is inherent single dimension of development to aware of other aspects of development in order to broaden the ideas and beliefs by enquiring questions or criticizing social phenomena creatively to achieve sustainable development in a truly communal way.
