Adaptation under Risk and Vulnerability of Paddy Farmer of Tambon Tha Muang, Selaphum District, Roi Et in the context of ASEAN Community

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study the adaptation under risk and vulnerability of paddy farmer of tambon Tha Muang, Selaphum District, Roi Et in context of ASEAN Community. Data were collected by in-depth interviews between November 2017 and July 2018.

The research found that the problems and adaptation of farmers in Tambon Tha Muang, Amphur Selaphum, Roi Et Province were composed of production, marketing, management and debt . We can divide in to the problems as following: Production Problem : 1.1) The problem of chemical fertilizer, we found that some farmers try to reduce the usage of chemical fertilizers, but it is very difficult because every household wants to meet their production’s target. 1.2) The problem of labors , they tried to decrease the labors and use the labors that they can negotiate the labor cost or use their cousins instead. 1.3) The problem of floods, they are adapted themselves by studying the weather forecasts and rainfall quantity to make the plan of their work in order to meet their target. Marketing problems : 2. 1) Price bargain and rice price decreased, the farmers give priority to make the village network to sell rice to different areas. They have an idea to discuss and negotiate with the relevant department. The management, we found that the farmers' rents the land in community and they need to negotiated the rental price with the land owners who are also living in the community. Debt problems, we found that farmers in the community tried to do not raise the debt. If they really need to borrow money , they will use the legally loan system and they have good plan for household expenses and also encourage household members to earn extra income and reduce household expenses.
