The Name of Naresuan Fighting Cock : An Analysis of the Meanings and Beliefs

Abstract

This research article aims to analyze the meanings and beliefs that are reflected in the names of the Naresuan Fighting Cock in Phitsanulok province.  The research employs a descriptive-analytical method and collects the data from the Naresuan Fighting Cock Conservation Center through the interviews. The study found a total of 94 names for Naresuan Fighting Cock in Phitsanulok province, which can be categorized into 10 types based on their meanings. They are ranked from most to least common as follows: 1) Meaning relating to objects and tools represented in 53 names (56.38%); 2) Meaning relating to human names, 8 names (8.51%); 3) Meaning relating to characteristics and actions, found in 8 names (8.51%); 4) Meaning relating to religions and cultures appeared in 6 names, accounting for 6.38%; 5) Meaning relating to animals were represented in 6 names, accounting for 6.38%; 6) Meaning relating to plants, with 4 names, accounting for 4.25%;  7) Meaning relating to nature and the environment were 3 names, 3.20%;  8) Meaning relating to places, it appeared in 3 names, 3.20%; 9) Meaning relating to rankings and positions, it was found in 2 names, 2.12%; and 10) Meaning relating to food names, it was found in only 1 name, 1.07%. The analysis of beliefs derived from the name of Naresuan Fighting Cock in Phitsanulok province identified five aspects of belief associated with the name of the cocks, as follows: 1) The Naresuan Fighting Cock is a sacred animal; 2) The Naresuan Fighting Cock is a bringer of luck and fulfillment; 3) The Naresuan Fighting Cock is an animal that brings wealth; 4) The Naresuan Fighting Cock is a symbol of success; and 5) The Naresuan Fighting Cock is an animal that enhances the prestige of the home and the city.
