การอ่าน ประชาธิปไตยบนเส้นขนาน ของวินทร์ เลียววาริณ แบบเควียร์: ความพัวพันระหว่างการเมือง อารมณ์ปรารถนา และความสัมพันธ์ข้ามตัวบท

ประชาธิปไตยบนเส้นขนาน ของวินทร์ เลียววาริณ นับเป็นนวนิยายเรื่องเด่นเนื่องจากได้รับรางวัลวรรณกรรมสร้างสรรค์ยอดเยี่ยมแห่งอาเซียนหรือซีไรต์ ประจำปี 2540 และเป็นที่สนใจในหมู่นักวิชาการและนักวิจารณ์ด้วยกลวิธีการประพันธ์แนวทดลอง อย่างไรก็ตาม นวนิยายเรื่องนี้ถูกจัดให้อยู่ในประเภทนวนิยายอิงประวัติศาสตร์และนวนิยายการเมือง บทความวิจัยโดยมุ่งวิเคราะห์นวนิยายเรื่องนี้ด้วยแนวทางที่ต่างออกไปโดยให้ความสำคัญแก่อารมณ์ปรารถนาแบบเควียร์อันซ่อนเร้นระหว่างตัวละครเอกชาย กรอบทฤษฎีที่ใช้ในการวิจัยคือแนวคิดเรื่องความปรารถนา ซึ่งการสมาคมในหมู่คนเพศเดียวกันของผู้ชาย โดยอีฟ โคซอฟสกี เซ็ดจ์วิก (Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick) กอปรกับการอ่านความสัมพันธ์ข้ามตัวบทที่นำเสนอโดยเฌราร์ เฌอแน็ต (Gérard Genette) ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ประชาธิปไตยบนเส้นขนาน มีระบบสัญลักษณ์ที่ส่อนัยเรื่องอารมณ์ปรารถนาแบบรักเพศเดียวกันของผู้ชาย การอ่านความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างตัวบทกับประเภทของตัวบทแนะนัยว่านวนิยายพยายามสร้างพื้นที่ที่เป็นเอกสิทธิ์ในหมู่ผู้ชายผ่านไวยากรณ์ของนวนิยายต่อสู้โลดโผน ภาพยนตร์แนวบุกเบิกตะวันตก และงานแนวกำลังภายใน ยิ่งไปกว่านั้น สารนอกตัวบทของนวนิยายโดยเฉพาะหน้าปกจากการพิมพ์หลายครั้งยังเต็มไปด้วยสัญลักษณ์ของลึงค์ แสดงความเกลียดกลัวผู้หญิงโดยนัย และนำไปสู่การเผยแสดงอารมณ์ปรารถนาแบบรักเพศเดียวกันของผู้ชาย บทความวิจัยนี้เป็นตัวอย่างของการวิเคราะห์ผลงานในทำเนียบวรรณกรรมตามแนวทางแบบเควียร์ เพื่อชี้ให้เห็นศักยภาพของแนวทางดังกล่าวในการสร้างความรุ่มรวยให้แก่การศึกษาวรรณกรรมไทยร่วมสมัย
