Words for Naming Foods in the Thai Language
Abstract
This paper aims to examine the semantic characteristics of words used for naming foods in the Thai language. The results of the examination show that names of ethnic groups, regions and countries (e.g.: Miao, Canton , Vietnam) as well as words concerning methods of cooking, food materials, words of taste, color, etc. are used to name foods. Moreover, it has been found out that some of those words are metaphors or loan words from English, French, Chinese, Japanese, etc. Additionally, Thai people’s food culture with its geographical and historical background is outlined throughout this study.
