EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF CONSERVATION AND PROMOTION OF LOCAL ARTS AND CULTURE FOR SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHERS IN ROI ET PROVINCE BY THE METHOD OF ART HISTORY

Abstract

The objectives of this research were threefold: 1) to briefly examine local artworks in Roi Et Province using an art historical research methodology; 2) to briefly investigate approaches to preserving and promoting local art and culture; and 3) to develop guidelines for preserving and promoting local art and culture by training social studies teachers in Roi Et Province in antiquities registration skills. The research methodology began with a review of relevant concepts, theories, literature, and research. This was followed by fieldwork, data organization, and data analysis. Subsequently, a workshop aimed at enhancing skills in registering antiquities and art objects was conducted with a purposively selected target group of ten social studies teachers in Roi Et Province. Data regarding the acquisition of these registration skills were collected from the participants using a questionnaire. Finally, the questionnaire data were analyzed, and the findings were summarized and presented through a descriptive analysis. The research findings revealed the following: 1) The artistic evidence found in Roi Et Province reflects an ancient history spanning from the prehistoric period through consecutive historical eras, including the Dvaravati, Khmer, and Lan Chang-Thai periods, thereby constituting a cultural heritage highly worthy of preservation. 2) A key protective approach to preservation is the registration of antiquities and art objects, as detailed documentation in the registry enables the tracking and recovery of lost items. 3) Regarding the workshop, the participating social studies teachers demonstrated the highest level of overall competency in registering antiquities and art objects, which serves as a sustainable means to preserve and perpetuate local art and culture.
