The cultural heritage change of Vietnamese in globalization: A case study of Charoen Bun temple (Yuan temple) in Aranyaprathet District, SA Kaeo Province

Abstract

The purposes of this article were 1) To present and appreciate the Vietnamese migration history, Vietnamese settlements and Vietnamese social relationship in Sa Kaeo province 2) To study the changes in the globalization of Charoen Bun Temple (Yuan Temple) in Sa Kaeo province. 3) To present the lost cultural heritage of Vietnamese people, who migrated to Sa Kaeo province. The results showed that: Charoen Bun Temple (Yuan Temple) was merely a residence. The place was not yet legally established as a temple. There was no ownership or possession of the land as the land belongs to the State Railway of Thailand. Currently there was no Anam Nikaya Mahayana monks staying there, but Theravada monks instead. The globalization has brought changes to the community that impact on social relationship between the temple and the community; consequently, the role of the temple declined, including the decline of the values the new generation had towards culture and traditions, such as the Vietnamese language and the conservation of traditions. Moreover, teaching the Vietnamese language was not popular in the area. Therefore, preserving the cultural heritage of Vietnamese in Sa Kaeo province must rely on the strong driving force of the people in the community, the monastic community, civil officers, young generations, public and private sectors, educational institutions, local government administrations and others.  It is essential to cooperate in solving the problems of management in the era of globalization and maintain the identity of the community. This, therefore, leads to the restoration, conservation, and promotion of Vietnamese cultural heritage not to be lost from the Sa Kaeo province and Thai society.
