THE HETEROTOPIA OF CONTEMPORALITY: A DEVELOPMENT OF PHUKET ART IN THE DECADE FROM 2510 B.E. TO 2560 B.E.

Abstract

This research studied the emergence of spaces where artistic ideologies dispute. The researchers did not focus on conflicts arising from personal ideologies but rather on the social and economic frameworks that compelled artists to uphold their ideologies, ultimately leading to a multiplicity of social spaces. These art spaces became spaces of ideological contention known as heterotopias. This research studied the process of forming heterotopias through anthropological research methods. The researcher interviewed artists to understand the history of the development of the art scene within the context of the tourism economy, which led to the expansion of groups of artists seeking to balance aesthetic communication and economic necessity. This research found that the mechanisms for the emergence of heterotopias, which resulted from: 1) The integration of art with the tourism economy since the 1960s that gave rise to contemporary art with styles that varied across different periods; 2) The internal conflicts artists faced between aesthetic pursuits and economic survival, prompting them to defend their artistic ideologies; and 3) The timeframe of urban development that became the framework of artistic social space.
