Abstract

The engagement of communities in social contribution activities often depends on government financial support. In the absence of such support, the sustainability of initiatives, particularly those spearheaded by elderly individuals with minimal support from younger generations, may be significantly compromised. To address this reliance on external funding, this study employs a design-thinking process involving four prospective communities in Ubon Ratchathani. This process entails consultation with experts from the private sector to gain self-understanding, assess possibilities, and collaboratively design a business plan following the guidelines of a social enterprise. The objective is to empower community groups to generate income while concurrently fostering social contributions, thereby facilitating sustainable and ongoing development independent of government aid.

The study identifies key factors influencing the development of social enterprises, including management systems, production processes, and economic opportunities. These factors pose challenges for elderly individuals, who may lack the requisite capabilities to navigate them independently. Consequently, support from local administrative bodies, relevant public agencies, private sectors, and local youth is necessary. Moreover, while social enterprises present viable economic prospects for certain communities, they may not be the optimal solution for those seeking to cultivate communal cohesion.
