Abstract

This research analyzed representations of hawkers in five daily newspapers in Thailand: Thairath, Daily News, Matichon, Kom Chad Luek, and Khaosod from 1 February 2016 to 31 January 2017. Linguistic strategies, intertextuality, and sociocultural practice relationships based on critical discourse analysis were employed. The results were that intertextuality strategies used included direct and indirect reporting, statistical data references, narrative insertion, policy, and law mentions representing hawkers as a societal problem, offenders, impoverished individuals requiring help, astute dealers, and workers deserving of a labor union. All representations were related to sociocultural practices, such as the history and policies of each era, social media platforms trends, law enforcement, and current government policy announcements as key factors affecting the activities and presentations of hawkers.
