Abstract

The purposes of this research are (1) to study the identity construction of running and (2) to explore social context conditions that affect running identity. This qualitative study collected information from the internet media, participant observation, and in-depth interviews with 30 runners using a selective method. The data collected were analyzed by philosophical theory. The results showed that the running identity was a procedural social phenomenon beginning with three motivational conditions: (1) the need for weight loss, (2) the desire to have good health, and (3) the desire to overcome their limitations. The social context conditions affecting the running identity included friends, family, work organization, and the internet media. The runners constructed their identity by defining their lifestyle, consuming fashionable products, posting running statistics, and using language for communication on social media to indicate identity, taste, class, social group affiliation, and the need to be accepted by society.
