Discourse on Good and Evil in Isan Didactic Literature

Abstract

This research aimed to study the presentation techniques and the discourse of good and evil in Isan didactic literature. The results revealed a variety of presentation techniques in Isan didactic literature employed by the authors, namely 1) the presentation through language techniques, 2) the presentation through persons as a medium, 3) the presentation through model precedents, giving examples of teachings through characters in stories, and 4) the presentation through beliefs and religious principles of Buddhism, Brahmin-Hinduism, and Isan traditional beliefs.


As for the discourse on good and evil in Isan didactic literature, good and evil were found to be related to social classes, genders, social roles, and social control through religious and traditional beliefs. It can be seen that good and evil are a mechanism for meaning establishment set to determine socially desirable behaviors of the residents between what is right and should be acted and what is wrong and should not be.
