Abstract

This article presents an analysis of the concept of ‘slow travel’. This concept emerged in the 1970s as a protest against ‘rush culture’ symbolized by McDonalds food establishments in Rome as locals opposed the invasion by American-style fast food. This opposition to fast food, considered harmful to public health, led to the concept of slow food. This concept spread throughout Europe and inspired new slow concepts, such as slow city, slow medicine, slow market, and slow travel. This last idea related to the promotion of longer visits by tourists to increase their appreciation and understanding of target destinations in terms of social, cultural, and historical dimensions. These dimensions may lead to more sustainable tourism and the promotion of other features of slow travel, such as walking, cycling, train travel, and urban studies.
