Abstract

This study aimed to determine the suicide rates during the period 2012-2016 in region of Thailand. Suicide rates per 100,000 individuals were analyzed and percentage of suicide methods were calculated for gender and age ranges among Thai regions. Chi-squared test was used to analyze the association between methods used and gender, age ranges and regions. Also, the in-depth interview for suicides were obtained from psychiatrists. The highest suicide rate was observed in 2015 (6.47 deaths per 100,000) while the lowest suicide rate was observed in 2014 (6.08). The suicide rates were 3.39 – 4.15 times higher in men than in women. The suicide rates in adults and elders (age range of 30-89 years) were greater than 6.30. Northern Thailand showed the highest annual suicide rates. The suicide rates in Northeastern and Central regions showed the increasing trend whereas Southern region showed the decreasing trend. The most common methods of suicide were hanging, strangulation, and suffocation; followed by the use of pesticides and animal toxins; chemicals and other toxins; and bullets. The suicide methods used varied significantly between regions, gender and age ranges (p < 0.01). The opinion of most psychiatrists was a clear tendency for suicide rate to increase. The recommended solutions were to strengthen the cognitive immunity in childhood, family and community relationships; strictly control the devices used for suicide; and improve the public health system. Therefore, in-depth studies and analyzes of each area are needed to inform the basis for the more effective implementation of related government agencies.
