Abstract

A study on the efficiency development of security systems in Krabi International Airport aims to 1) explore the problems and obstacles affecting security systems of Krabi International Airport, 2) study approaches to the efficiency development of its security systems to meet the international standard, and 3) propose security measures for Krabi International Airport in line with the international standard. A qualitative research method was applied in which data were collected by in-depth interviews with the key informants, including executives and staffs involving in security matters of Krabi International Airport. Findings from the study suggested that there were seven areas of concern with respect to the problems and obstacles affecting security systems of Krabi International Airport. These include airport area, personnel capacity, budget, tools and equipment, property insecurity, poor cooperation, and unauthorized taxi cabs (“Private Taxis”). All these problems and obstacles had led to the acts or attempts to endanger passengers at Krabi International Airport. Therefore, to ensure that Krabi International Airport’s security systems can efficiently prevent any unlawful intervention and meet the requirements regulated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and National Civil Aviation Security Programme (NCASP), this research has proposed solutions for those seven areas of concern through four aspects of security measures. These include security measures inside and outside the terminals, passenger and baggage screening before boarding, and cargo, postal and catering checking. This is to ensure that Krabi International Airport’s security systems are efficient and suitable for the current situation.
