An Analysis of Using Objects in Contemporary Artistic Creation of Martin Creed and Choi Jeong Hwa
Main Article Content
Abstract
An analysis of the use of objects in the contemporary artistic creations of Martin Creed and Choi Jeong Hwa, through the theories of materiality, object-oriented ontology, becoming, and the death of the author, got the following results: 1) The status of objects can change to that of artworks depending on context, environment, and the artistic activities in which the objects are engaged. 2) The use of objects to create artworks results in a translation of these objects, giving them the potential to possess specific properties as artworks. 3) The use of objects in creating artworks establishes a relational space on two levels, where each part influences the other. It also breaks down boundaries to merge different spaces, resulting in a new space and leading to the dissolution of stable identities. 4) The change in the status of objects to artworks raises questions about artistic value, allowing viewers to consider the artworks through their own experiences without the influence of the artists. 5) The artworks of both artists convey core concepts and important subjects related to art criticism and the significance of the viewer’s experience. On the one hand, Martin Creed’s artworks stand out in their challenge to artistic judgment, infused with playfulness and humor. On the other hand, Choi Jeong Hwa’s artworks also express positive emotions and feelings, as well as reflecting local culture.
