Guidelines for developing community participation in sustainable tourism development, Bang Nam Phueng Community, Phra Pradaeng District in Samut Prakan Province

Abstract

The objectives of this research were 1) to study the relationship of perceived positive and negative impacts on community participation in sustainable tourism development; Bang Nam Phueng Community 2) to study factors affecting the perception of perceived positive and negative impacts on community participation in sustainable tourism development Bang Nam Phueng Community 3) to study ways to develop community participation in sustainable tourism development in Bang Nam Phueng Community. The sampling is people living in Bang Nam Phueng Community. A total of 370 people were selected by multistage sampling. The tool used in the research was a questionnaire and an interview form developed from the analysis of the quantitative questionnaire. Statistics used for data analysis were percentage, mean, and standard deviation, Pearson correlation coefficient analysis and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The statistical significance was at the 0.01 level.

The results showed that 1) the relationship of perceived positive and negative impacts on community participation in sustainable tourism development. Overall, it was at a high level. 2) There are three factors affecting the perception of positive impacts: Community Attachment, Environmental Attitude, and Economic Dependency on tourism can predict the impact on perceived positive impact on community participation in sustainable tourism development with an R2 value of 0.856 3) There are three factors affecting the perception of negative impact which the same as the factors affecting positive perceptions can predict the impact on the perceived negative impact on community participation in sustainable tourism development, with an R2 value of 0.449. After that, the quantitative data were synthesized into qualitative data to confirm the hypothesis and find ways to develop further participation. The results were consistent with the quantitative results. There are suggestions to encourage youth to participate in order to ensure that participation is sustainable in the Bang Nam Phueng community.
