The Procedure of Creating the Buddha Image Board (Phra Phaeng) Based on Lanna Buddhist Arts

Abstract

This research is objectives: 1) to study the history and belief in creating the Lanna Buddha Image Board, 2) to study the Buddha Image Board creating procedure in Lampang and 3) to propose the guidelines in Buddha Image Board creating procedure based on Lanna Buddhist Arts. Itís methodology is the qualitative research.

The Finding are that:  1) the Buddha Image Board is the Lanna wooden Buddhist arts generally created with the traditional belief in the past Buddhas. On that broad, the 28 Buddha images were placed conveying to them. On the other hand, this work is related to the traditional belief about the Buddhist art creation is for the Buddha worship and prolonging Buddhism 5,000 years continuity. Furthermore, it has done for oneself merit making with the wish for the outflow of good result shall fulfill their desires, i.e., Nibbana.

2) The age of creation Buddha Image Board creating procedure in Lampang was dated during 22-25 Buddhist Centuries. The perfect original arts still exist even though their conditions have deteriorated or some Buddha images have been removed. The significant thing is that since 100 years there has no any the Buddha image broad creation at all. The found original form of the Buddha images broad looks beautiful having a variety of decorations according to the individuality of the local artists.

3) The guideline in itís creation is the process of knowledge about the ideal creation of the Lanna Buddha image. The result of this conveys the meaning of virtues and the Buddhist faith. It has to conserve and continue to the Buddhist virtues and wisdom as well as a further transference the knowledge of it.
