This research “the development of the essential basic skills for learning English of the first year students, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, Chiang Mai campus” aimed to develop the essential basic skills for learning English of the first year students, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, Chiang Mai campus and to investigate factors leading to their development. The target group consisted of 34 first year English major students. The data collection was conducted using the pretest, the posttest and the formative tests after finishing each lesson. The data analysis consisted of t-test, mean, standard deviation and percentage. The results of this study were as (1) the students developed the essential basic skills for learning English significantly at the 0.01 level and 30 students (88.24%) passed the formative tests in each lesson according to the set criteria and (2) the factors leading to their development were external and intrinsic motivations, the appropriate selection of instruction patterns, and the roles of the teacher.
