A Philosophy of Food in Shōjin Ryori

Abstract

The research titled a philosophy of food in Shōjin Ryori which the objective is analyzing Shōjin Ryori by the Zen philosophy framework. This research used the documentary methodology. The research expressed that Metaphysics in Shōjin Ryori by the name means spiritual vegetarian. Zen Buddhism believed in the unity of mind in the name of Buddhahood, even food and ingredients are the part of Buddhahood too. Epistemology in Shōjin Ryori represented through a zen practice which focused on non-duality concept between the subject and object, hence all of daily activities can be the tools to zen awakening. Ethics in Shōjin Ryori expressed through respect and simple actions to whole lives even food because they are all intrinsic value, called Buddhahood. Arrangement of food emphasized the simplicity that Tenso was attentive for knowing seasonal and flavors of foods. For cooking have to seasoning carefully without losing the original taste. Eating ethics of zen based on respect for their sacrifice. Tasting food should not judgment by pleasure, just seeing the whole available of tastes, and setting zero food waste throughout the processes of arranging and eating.
