Abstract

Introduction: The producer, as a key figure in the administration and management of theatrical productions across varying scales, plays a critical role in the performing arts sector. This role is instrumental in advancing the creative industries, in alignment with the strategic framework for the development of the performing arts business by the Creative Economy Agency (Public Organization) Objective: This research aims to explore production management approaches for small-scale theatre groups, using the case study of Drama Crazy!, a play by the “Saosoong” theatre group comprising fewer than 10 members. The production was staged at Play Art House, a gallery space on Song Wat Road Methods: through participatory and practice-based research methods. Findings indicate a prototype for business-oriented production management by the producer, consisting of three main stages: Pre-Production – budgeting, marketing strategy, public relations, and collaborative planning During Production – ticketing, front-of-house coordination, and technical problem-solving Post-Production – evaluation of workflow, financial outcomes, and reflection on collaboration processes. Results: The study reveals that the producer plays a pivotal role in supporting small theatre groups by bridging artistic creation and business management. Their contributions span financial planning, marketing and promotion, team coordination, and technical oversight. This enables performances to reach audiences more effectively while ensuring financial viability and collaborative success. Conclusion: Accordingly, the research proposes a replicable model of producer-led production management that can be adopted by other small-scale performing arts groups. It highlights how integrating creative and managerial functions can help foster sustainability and income generation within the creative industry.
