Analysis of Gender Stereotype of Main Characters in Picture Books for Children Aged 3-6

This research aimed to (1) to analyze the types of picture book for children aged 3-6 and (2) analyze gender stereotype of main characters in picture books for children aged 3-6 according to three aspects: physical appearance, personal traits, and main interests. The population was main characters appearing in 68 picture books rewarded from the year of 2014 to 2023 by Office of the Basic Education Commission. The research instrument was a data analysis form. The data were analyzed by using frequency and percentage. The research results showed that (1) there were 4 types of picture books for children aged 3-6 which were picture story books (48.5%), wordless books (26.5%), concept books (16.2%), and board books (8.8%), respectively; (2) gender stereotype of main characters in picture books found that (2.1) physical appearance: the highest percentage fell on the appearance of the main character (36.6%), and gender and clothes (31.7%). (2.2) personal traits: the highest percentage fell on the emotional and feeling expression (53.2%), and physical expression (48.8%). (2.3) main interests: the highest percentage fell on the intelligences (65.1%), and moral and ethics (34.9%), respectively.
