ROLES OF PRESCHOOL PARENTS’ INVOLVEMENT IN SUPPORTING ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING

Abstract

The research objective was to study roles of preschool parents’ involvement in supporting English language learning: positive learning support, creating interaction, and environmental arrangement. Population comprised 128 parents of preschoolers studying in Intensive English programs at a private school. Thailand in the first semester of the academic year 2023. The research tool was a questionnaire, and the data were analyzed by frequency distribution, percentage, the mean, and standard deviation. The results found that the overall role of preschool parents’ involvement in supporting English language learning was at a medium level (M =3.42, S.D. =1.18). Considering each sub-idea, it was found that positive learning support was at a high level (M = 3.98, S.D. =0.91). It consisted of providing reinforcement (M = 4.21, S.D. =0.89) and being a role model in daily routine (M = 3.82, S.D. =0.93). The rest of two sub-ideas was at a medium level (2.80 ≤ M ≤ 3.48): (1) Environmental arrangement (M = 3.48, S.D. =1.22) consisted of creating safe atmosphere in using English language (M =3.84, S.D. =1.15) and arranging the environment for using English (M =3.05, S.D. =1.33). (2) Creating interaction (M = 2.80, S.D. =1.41) consisted of using English activities with family members (M =3.11, S.D. =1.18) and creating opportunities to learn English with others (M =2.07, S.D. =1.35), respectively.
