Competency Development Process of Coordinator in Meeting and Convention Business: Case Study Professional Convention Organizer in Bangkok

Abstract

The objectives of this research is to study the process for developing the meeting coordinator’s competence in the professional meeting organizer. This research conducted through qualitative research methodology by analyzing data from documents and in-depth interviews which were collected from 1) experts in the field, including project managers and operational coordinator 2) experts in MICE capabilities development  from governmental and educational institutions 3) Certified Meeting Professional: CMP. The samples were selected by a snowball sampling technique based on recommendations from the previous key informants.


The findings from this study found that the component of competency development for meeting coordinators consist of several factors, which are desirable competency in the meeting coordinator and creating a learning environment, acquisition of competent staff,  and human resource development and competency development in personal, groups and organizational level. According to the finding, lead to the design of the development process of desirable competency for the coordinator by 1) selecting people who are competent in accordance with the needs of the organization, 2) bringing them into the learning process through individual awareness, 3) determining the goals of individual, team and organization development, 4) motivating people and teams, 5) supporting learning process in all levels, through 6) practical guidelines and bringing knowledge into practices and 7) providing feedback in order to promote desirable competence and good performance.
