งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาบทบาทของพระจันทร์ในอรรถกถาชาดกซึ่งเป็นคัมภีร์สำคัญในพุทธศาสนา ข้อมูลที่ใช้ในการศึกษาคืออรรถกถาชาดกจำนวน 89 เรื่องจากทั้งหมด 547 เรื่อง ผลการวิจัยพบว่าอรรถกถาชาดกจำนวน 89 เรื่องปรากฏบทบาทของพระจันทร์ 3 ลักษณะ ประการแรกคือ พระจันทร์มีบทบาทเป็นความเปรียบ พบในอรรถกถาชาดกจำนวน 58 เรื่อง มี 4 ลักษณะคือ พระจันทร์ปรากฏร่วมกับราหู พระจันทร์ปรากฏร่วมกับพระอาทิตย์ พระจันทร์ปรากฏร่วมกับท้องฟ้า และพระจันทร์ปรากฏโดยลำพัง อรรถกถาชาดกเปรียบพระจันทร์กับปัญญาของพระโพธิสัตว์และพระพุทธเจ้า แสดงให้เห็นว่าพระโพธิสัตว์ต้องผ่านการผจญกับกิเลสและอวิชชาต่าง ๆ จนกระทั่งบำเพ็ญปัญญาบารมีเต็มบริบูรณ์ ซึ่งเป็นการแสดงปัญญาที่ช่วยเหลือเกื้อกูลสัตว์โลก ประการที่สองคือ พระจันทร์มีบทบาทเป็นฉากของเรื่อง ปรากฏในอรรถกถาชาดกจำนวน 36 เรื่อง ได้แก่ การใช้พระจันทร์เป็นฉากในการประกอบพิธีกรรมทางพุทธศาสนาและการใช้พระจันทร์เป็นฉากเพื่อสร้างบรรยากาศในเรื่อง การใช้พระจันทร์เป็นฉากทำให้ผู้อ่านเข้าใจอารมณ์ความรู้สึกของตัวละครและเข้าในสาระสำคัญของตัวบทได้ดียิ่งขึ้น ประการสุดท้ายคือ พระจันทร์มีบทบาทแสดงตำนานเรื่องกระต่ายบนดวงจันทร์ และตำนานเรื่องเทวดาคือพระจันทเทพบุตร ปรากฏในอรรถกถาชาดกจำนวน 7 เรื่อง บทบาทของพระจันทร์ในอรรถกถาชาดกทั้ง 3 ลักษณะมีความสัมพันธ์เชื่อมโยงถึงกัน โดยมีนัยสื่อถึงแนวคิดเรื่องปัญญาในอรรถกถาชาดก ซึ่งมีเนื้อหาแสดงพระจริยวัตรอันงดงามของพระโพธิสัตว์ที่เน้นการบำเพ็ญบารมีเพื่อข้ามพ้นสังสารวัฏ

Abstract

This research aims to study the role of the moon in the Jataka-atthakatha. The data used in this study appeared in 89 out of 547 jātakas. The study reveals that in 89 stories and can be classified into 4 types: the moon, the moon co-occurred with the eclipse, the moon co-occurred with the sun, and the moon co-occurred with the sky. The moon is used to represent the wisdom of the bodhisatta and the Buddha. It demonstrates that the bodhisatta has to overcome all the defilements and ignorance in order to fulfill the perfection of wisdom with the aspiration to attain Buddhahood.The moon also becomes the setting in 36 stories. It appears as the main background setting of the story and as the venue of Buddhist ceremonies. The use of the moon as the setting helps to represent the emotions and feelings of the characters and to convey the message of the stories. In addition, in seven stories the myths of the rabbit in the moon and of the Canda Deva are told. These roles of the moon in the Jataka-atthakatha are related and covey the Buddhist concept of wisdom.
