Mixed Media Paintings by Hand Made Appliqué Technique Inspired by The Autism Spectrum Disorder Children’s Paintings.

The research methodology of this creative research was divided into 2 parts: [1] posing questions on artistic expression of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and [2] the creation of art pieces by the researcher, inspired by the mentioned artistic expression. This qualitative research uncovered characteristics of child art. After the summarization, the understanding was utilized to create unique artworks. Research results showed that art can be a therapeutic treatment for hyperactive disorder; children are likely to concentrate on the art activity longer than other activities. Furthermore, art is beneficial to child development in many ways for children with autism spectrum disorder. It improves their concentration, enhances their thinking skills, and their agility of communication about their learning capabilities from surrounding environments. Originating from their imaginations, the artworks of children with autism spectrum disorder are undoubtedly pure beauty. The artistic creation as research result is handcrafted mixed-media artworks utilizing the technique of appliqué or clothing collage to express the pure and unlimited imaginations of children with autism spectrum disorder.
