Psychoanalysis theory points out that human is an irrational being, controlled by subconsciousness, a hidden power in mind. Sub-consciousness by Sigmund Freud is considered as a fundamental of this theory. Thinkers in a later period, for example Jacques Lacan, further developed the psychoanalysis theory by linking it with structural linguistics. Lacan gave an importance to structure of language, and semiotic system, both of which reflect power relationships in society, involving sexuality, femininity, and masculinity as examples. When used to interpret symbols appearing in artworks by Thai contemporary female artists, the psychoanalysis theory allows the clarification of symbolic system to be perceived.
