Abstract

World War 1 damaged Europe and the rest of the world dramatically. The fighting scenario and the development of weapons of the period had made the survived soldiers disabled in various ways never found in any previous war. Notably the survivors’s disfigured faces which effected directly caused by the trench warfare. A number of artists immortalised these tragic events into poignancy artworks. Doctors and artists collaborated to help these victims with plastic surgery and sculptural technics most advance of the period. This article aimed to study how doctors and sculptors created masks for the disfigured soldiers. A number of analysing a distinctive way of how  sculptor studied each specific facies character and specific way of disfiguring, this article found that masks created very well suited to a distinctive face of each handicapped patient. These masks helped creating more chances for patients to mingle normally with the social environment
