Design and Construction of Costume and Regalia of Phraya Phichai Dap Hak for Royal Ceremonies in the Thonburi Period

Abstract

This research studies the patterns of attire and regalia of Phraya Phichai Dap Hak used in royal ceremonies during the Thonburi period. The objective was to design and construct a model corresponding to his 5,000 Sakdina (feudal rank) of Mueang Phichai. Findings regarding attire revealed that Phraya Phichai Dap Hak was royally bestowed a Lomphok Sewian Nak (a headdress with a nak [alloy] base), a white, sheer, knee-length, front-opening Krui (gown), a Pha Lai Yang (patterned cloth) with a singlelayer Cherng Kruai (cone motif) hem, at least one Suea Khem Khap (brocade jacket), a Pha Kiao (waist-sash) with a Rat Prakot Nam Khanun (thorny-patterned belt), a Muak Song Praphat (travel cap), and a Muak Song Mala Biang (asymmetrical formal hat). A design and modeling process using computer software was employed to arrange the composition and structure of the simulated models used in the royal ceremony.
Regarding regalia, findings show he was bestowed a flintlock rifle, a cradle-like palanquin (Yuay Yan), a Rom Thong Yu (tiered umbrella), a golden Chiat (shield), a Krabi Bang Thong (gold-banded sword), a golden Khontho (ewer), a golden Kunthi (water pot), a golden betel box, and a golden flared spittoon. Scenic illustrations were also designed to simulate these forms of regalia.
The design of the costumes and regalia of Phraya Phichai Dab Hak has created value and contributed to the knowledge base of design, moving from the creation of beauty to the preservation and sustainable transmission of cultural heritage. Currently, the works are on display at the Local Museum, Uttaradit Rajabhat University, Uttaradit Province.
