Development and Evaluation of a Prototype for 3D Virtual Exhibition Presentation Using Augmented Reality (AR) Technology for Designers

This research aimed to (1) examine the forms and effectiveness of threedimensional exhibition presentation using Augmented Reality (AR) technology that influence designers’ perception, and (2) develop and evaluate a prototype of threedimensional virtual exhibition presentation using AR technology for designers. The case study was the “Exhibition and Creative Media Design Program Promotional Exhibition,” designed as a 3D model in SketchUp for iPad with the View in AR function. The sample group consisted of 45 designers who assessed the prototype’s presentation effectiveness based on five criteria: content comprehension, engagement, usability, design representation, and overall satisfaction. The results indicated that the overall evaluation was at a high level (x̄= 4.41, S.D. = 0.52), suggesting that the developed prototype effectively supported design communication and engagement through AR. Participants expressed that viewing the 3D model in AR allowed better understanding of scale, proportion, and spatial context, which enhanced perception compared to traditional 2D representations. The study also identified design suggestions for improvement, such as adding toggleable information labels, guided view modes, and adjustable lighting and surface stability features to increase user control and comfort during AR interaction. Future studies are recommended to test the prototype with general audiences and compare it with real-scale exhibition models to validate the generalizability and usability of the proposed design approach.
