Design of a Gamification-Based Game to Promote Cultural Tourism: A Case Study of Nan

This creative research aims to 1) explore the concept of gamification and design a gamified experience that enhances user engagement in perceiving and understanding local arts and cultural narratives, and 2) propose a design approach for a game and its mechanics that emphasizes learning and user participation in engaging with the cultural content of Nan Province. The study focuses on transmitting local cultural knowledge through a motivational, enjoyable, and exploratory gameplay experience. Player learning behavior was studied and analyzed alongside cultural data to design the content, game mechanics, and player experience of a prototype game titled Culture Quest. The game applies gamification principles and the MDA Framework ( Mechanics, Dynamics, and Aesthetics) to shape gameplay systems and user experiences that promote fun, engagement and learning through interactive in-game activities creatively linked to realworld locations in Nan. The research found that the most suitable gameplay model is the Open World format, which allows for the integration of in-game missions and activities to assess learning through gameplay. This model aligns with player motivations that favor autonomy and freedom in exploration. Key gameplay elements that effectively encourage prolonged engagement include a progression system, task-oriented goals, visible outcomes, creative interaction, exploration, and the collection of in-game items. The design of the prototype successfully incorporates these gameplay mechanics to foster engagement and participation. It seamlessly blends spatial learning with cultural content, providing an experience that captures the player’s interest.
