Emperor Taizong of Tang’s Question and Xuánzàng’s Reply
What is the meaning of Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā?

In this article I am curious about the explanation of the meaning of the name of the Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā, which appears in the “introduction” to the new Thai translation of Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra 2022 when referring to the Xuanzang’s opinions of the sūtra which he expresses to the Emperor Taizong of Tang. Here his opinions have been wrongly cited saying that “wisdom or perfection of wisdom is like a vajra to destroy defilement”. On the contrary, Xuanzang interprets vajra as defilement, not wisdom, defilement which is as hard as vajra. This is like referring to a vajra as an illusion which is cut, as opposed to using a vajra to cut and shatter illusions as it was understood in the past.
Moreover, Khotanese version of Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra and Kamalaśīla’s commentary of Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā follow Xuánzàng’s interpretation.
