An Analytical Study for Storyline Design in the Dance Drama “Surasiang Sudachan”

Abstract

This research article aims to create a storyline for a historical dance drama performance in a contemporary Thai dance format. The study utilizes a qualitative research methodology and a Creative Research process, conducted through three primary stages: 1) data collection from primary and secondary sources, including Royal Chronicles, historical records, and critical historical interpretations, complemented by in-depth interviews; 2) data analysis using Thematic Analysis; and 3) the refinement and development of the creative work based on expert feedback.

The findings reveal that the conciseness of the Royal Chronicles leaves significant "gaps" that allow the researcher to interject emotional narratives through the construction of a "Counter-Narrative." This approach seeks to restore a sense of humanity to the character of Thao Si Sudachan. By applying Surapol Virulrak’s (2004) theory of dance drama design specifically in the stages of Concept Definition and Drafting in conjunction with Aristotle’s six elements of tragedy (Poetics), the researcher developed a dramatic storyline capable of portraying political tensions and the complexities of ordinary human experience within the currents of power. This creative endeavor elevates contemporary Thai dance as a platform for learning and significant social critique.
