The Effect of Cognitive Behavioral Group Counseling on Mental Toughness of High School Students

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to develop a cognitive behavioral group counseling program to improve mental toughness of high school students and to also test its effectiveness in achieving the result. The sample consisted of 12 high school students of Pattaya City 11 School, Thailand. The research instruments included a 48 item Mental Toughness Questionnaire and the cognitive behavioral group counseling program. Through repeated measure design, the result data were analyzed by descriptive statistical analysis and multivariate analysis.


               The results indicated that the cognitive behavioral group counseling program can be developed and made effective in improving mental toughness of high school students with positive increase by Cohen’s Large scale effect  ES 0.600 ( 95% CI [-26.176 to -8.24]). The mean difference of mental toughness score between samples showed that total mental toughness scores of experimental group was significantly higher than of control group at p < .05 during following up period.
