The Experimental Study of Latent Fingerprint Stability on Black Garbage Bags Using Rhodamine-6G Dyeing
Main Article Content
Abstract
The objective of this study was to examine the stability of latent fingerprints on plastic surfaces, using thin black garbage bags as substrates. In this experiment, the garbage bags were cut into 2 x 2-inch squares to serve as samples. Fingerprints were then deposited on each sample under controlled conditions by applying a consistent pressure of 500 grams using a weighing scale. The samples were stored and analyzed at 11 different time intervals: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. Each sample underwent cyanoacrylate (superglue) fuming, followed by staining with Rhodamine-6G solution. The developed fingerprints were then illuminated using an Alternative Light Source (Polylight) at a wavelength of 505 nm and observed through a 550 nm filter. Photographs were captured for analysis and subsequently uploaded to a Mini-AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) to evaluate minutiae characteristics. The results indicated that the clarity and number of minutiae features declined rapidly from day 0 to day 7. From day 14 to day 28, the rate of deterioration slowed. Notably, even after 28 days, sufficient minutiae characteristics remained to allow for individual identification. This study demonstrates that latent fingerprints on thin black plastic surfaces can retain identifiable features over time and highlights the potential application of such analysis in forensic identification and crime scene investigations.
