Abstract

Japanese detective comics have employed forensic science principles to enhance the authenticity and credibility of their investigative narratives, thereby contributing to their wide-spread popularity. However, the influence of these references affects real-life domains such as the justice system and criminal emulation. This research aims to investigate and analyze the extent to which the portrayal of forensic science principles in Japanese detective comics aligns with real-life forensic science. Qualitative research methods, including documentary research and in-depth interviews, were utilized to gather and analyze data from 100 volumes of manga series Detective Conan. Conversations pertaining to forensic science were categorized into three primary fields: Criminalistics, Crime Scene Investigation, and Forensic Medicine. These discussions were thoroughly examined and compared with relevant theories. The collected data were then employed to formulate an interview guide for conducting in-depth interviews with six forensic science experts. The research findings revealed a total of 235 conversations that referenced forensic science. The researchers concluded that within the analyzed samples, there were 155 principles. Out of these, 80 principles (51.61 percent) depicted in the series were found to be consistent with real-life forensic science theories, while 12 principles (7.74 percent) portrayed in the series were inconsistent. Furthermore, 63 principles (40 percent) exhibited partial relevance to real-life contexts. In conclusion, the portrayal of forensic science principles in Detective Conan is not entirely congruent with real-life forensic science theories. While certain principles prove practical and accurate, others are only partially aligned or completely divergent. This discrepancy can be attributed to various factors, such as linguistic interpretation, referencing textbooks, or the contextual differences within forensic science of each country. Readers are advised to exercise discretion when learning forensic science from Detective Conan.
