Levels of Knowledge in Forensic Evidence Collection of Inquiry Officers in Provincial Police Region 7

Abstract

          This research aimed to study the levels of knowledge in forensic evidence collection of inquiry officers in Provincial Police Region 7 between October 2018 and March 2020. The quantitative data were collected from written surveys distributed to 300 subjects purposively sampled from a total population of 664 inquiry officers in Provincial Police Region 7. Statistical methods of Pearson’s Chi-square and binary logistic regression were employed in data analysis. The majority of the participants (78%) reported that they had a moderate level of knowledge in forensic evidence collection. In the bivariate analysis, the inquiry officer’s knowledge and skills in forensic evidence collection were statistically related to the number of service years (χ2 = 24.433, p < 0.05) and the highest correlation of odd ratio was 16 to 20 years of service being 8.572. The factor of the time passed since their last trainings in crime scene investigation and forensic science (χ2 = 31.242, p < 0.05) was also predictive of the level of knowledge in forensic evidence collection. The longer the period after the last training, the lower the level of knowledge inquiry officers had in forensic evidence collection. It can be concluded that the inquiry officers in Provincial Police Region 7, The average forensic evidence collection knowledge was moderate, and the analytical logistics regression could accurately predict the level of knowledge in forensic evidence collection of officers being  75.3% on average.  the level of forensic evidence collection knowledge. According to research, inquiry officers should develop their capacity to investigate crime scenes and forensic knowledge in a systematic and continuous manner and organize to have a learning resource for investigating crime scenes in various cases and knowledge of forensic science related to various types of witness objects that inquiry officers can search or learn on their own.
