Offender’s Modus Operandi versus Signature crime: The similar but different

Abstract

                   The individualistic human behavior usually remain consistent. There are possible manifestation of offender behavior at a crime scene-modus operandi, personation or signature crime, and staging. This academic article therefore is chiefly aimed at reviewing the literatures related to the meaning, background, aspect, benefit, limitations and compare the same or different between Offender’s Modus Operandi versus Signature crime. For the benefit of the law enforcement to apply in the investigation process.
                   A results of study are Modus Operandi involves those behaviors necessary for the successful commission of a crime and also a learned behavior. However, these type behaviors are developed over time and change as offender gain experience, build confidence. The Signature crime, on the other hand, is not required in order to commit the crime. Rather,it serves the emotional or psychological needs of the offender and the essential core of the signature. When present, that it is always the same.
                  To decide what are Offender’s Modus Operandi or Signature crime, Use consideration in the process of assessing the location of the crime scene, what do for success of the crime, protection of identity; and successful escape or what helps to serve the offender’s emotional and psychological needs. Understanding and recognizing both the MO and the signature crime aspect of the event can enable the professional investigator to “link”events in a series,more than just one thing.
