Abstract
Creating Printmaking Artworks with Natural Dyes from Plants in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province.
This creative research on printmaking with natural dyes from plants in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province is aimed at collecting information about these dye plants in a database system for the use in printmaking and at creating printmaking artworks using these natural dyes. This work involves studying, collecting, and analyzing dye plants from various sources, including documents, a group of natural tie - dye producers (Bai Mai Group) in Khiriwong Village, and a group of natural color tie - woven fabric producers (Ban Noen - Thammang). The information gathered is then stored in database. Experiments on extracting dye from plants for printing are focused on the three primary colors (yellow, red and blue), and on one neutral color (grey or black). Research and tests to find a suitable natural printing ink resulted in the following formula: 3 tablespoons of colored water from dye plants, 1 tablespoon of mordant and 1 tablespoon of tapioca starch. Printing proofs are made with a woodcut technique on 3 types of papers (Canson, Fabriano, and Sa paper) and on cotton, and by a monoprint technique. The original artworks produced are a series about family relations and represent happiness, love and warmth. The artworks are semi - abstract; the visual elements are based on local art forms such as shadow puppets, designs on natural tie - dye and batik cloths. Lines convey form and movement. Tones are distinct and have a consistent value. Warm tones, cool tones, and strong colors are used to get a feeling of tenderness. A woodcut technique and a print installation technique are used for these original works of art. This series shows the development of the researcher’s new printmaking technique. It can be applied to teaching students printmaking. This is another way of developing the study of fine arts.
