ราวณะบุกยมโลกที่ปราสาทพิมาย

Abstract

บทความนี้นำเสนอประเด็นใหม่ในการตีความภาพสลักบนหน้าบันวิมานปราสาทประธานด้านทิศตะวันออกของปราสาทพิมาย อำเภอพิมาย จังหวัดนครราชสีมา จากเดิมที่นักวิชาการมักตีความว่าตรงกับรามเกียรติ์ของไทย ตอน ท้าวมาลีวราช ว่าความ แต่จากการศึกษาพบว่า ประติมานิรมาณวิทยาของภาพสลักดังกล่าว สอดคล้องกับเรื่องราวที่พรรณนาไว้ในมหากาพย์รามาณะ ฉบับวาลมิกิ กาณฑ์ที่ 7 อุตรกาณฑ์ เป็นตอนที่ราวณะ (ทศกัณฐ์) นั่งบุษบกวิมาน ไปยังยมโลกเพื่อต่อกรกับพระยมเทพเจ้าแห่งความตาย แต่สงครามดังกล่าวต้องสิ้นสุดลงเพราะพระพรหมทรงวิงวอนไม่ให้พระยมทรงใช้คทายมทัณฑ์อันเป็นอาวุธที่พระยมใช้พิพากษาผู้ตายในยมโลกสังหารราวณะ เนื่องจากพระพรหมเคยประทานพรแก่ราวณะว่า จะไม่มีเผ่าพงศ์สูงส่งใดๆ สามารถสังหารราวณะได้ เรื่องจึงจบลงที่พระยมทรงยอมทำตามรับสั่งของพระพรหมและยุติสงครามดังกล่าวด้วยพระองค์เอง เพื่อทรงรักษาความสัตย์ของพระพรหมที่ประทานไว้แก่ราวณะ ซึ่งนับว่าสูงค่ายิ่งกว่าการสังหารราวณะตามคำพิพากษาด้วยคทายมทัณฑ์ของพระยมRavana Invading Yama-Loka at Prasat Phimai.

       This article proposes a new interpretation of pediment installed at the main tower on the East side of Prasat Phimai, located in Phimai District, Nakornratchasima Province. Based on original interpretation by academics, the impediment was believed to correspond to the episode of the Lord Malivaraj in the Thai version of Ramayana epic. However, an intensive study into the impediment showed that the iconography of such impediment is more consistent with the story described in Book VII , Uttara Kanda of the Valmiki version of Ramayana epic whereby Ravana (Dasakanta in Thai version of Ramayana) was riding a flying pavilion to Yama-Loka (the City of Yama or the underworld) to fight with Lord Yama (the Lord of the Dead).

        However, the war was put to an end as Lord Brahma implored that the Lord Yama refrain from killing Ravana by using his Rod of the Death, which was the same tool used in judging the dead in Yama-Loka. This was because Lord Brahma had earlier given a blessing to Ravana that no other person of noble family could ever kill Ravana. Lord Yama thus conformed to the request of Lord Brahma and ended the war by himself in order to maintain the integrity of Lord Brahma with respect to the blessing. This act is considered to be more heroic than to kill Ravana using the Rod of the Death.
