The Study of the Aesthetic Values in the So - cial Context and the Appearance from Envi - ronmental Effect on the Glass-mosaic Murals on the Outer-walls of Ubosoth, Wat Maneechan, Phutthaisong District, Bureerum Province.
This study on had the purpose of finding out the context and the change in the environment, perception, attitude as well as the interaction of the local people toward the art works existing in their respective community after the creation of the “glass mosaic” on the wall of the ubosot of the temple in that community. This mural reflects the artists’ creation of beauty in the form of an art work using glass mosaic to decorate the outer walls of the building. This resulting in a new form of Thai art is considered unique and original. This Thai style glass mosaic mural is the work of two artists: Assistant Professor Asawinee Wanjing and Mr.Udom Wanjing. Their inspiration came for their faith in Buddhism and the conventional Thai art together with their admiration of the community people who longed to have some art work that could serve as a record of their tradition and culture as well as the impressive efforts or virtue of the people worthy of their taking pride in them.
Moreover, the mural will exist along with this religious place to be the center of their spirit to witness to the younger generation and those to come. More significantly, the mural will be the record in an art form of the community’s story that reflects the artistic values pertaining to the environment and the social context or interaction among the people, in particular their harmony, their loyalty to the monarch and their faith in Buddhism.
The result from the surrounding evidence indicates that changes took place among the local people in their social activities. Many of them began to realize the value of using the temple compound, so several activities were conducted. The old ubosot that had been neglected and overlooked began to receive some attention and passersby were attracted to stop by to appreciate the glass mosaic. Through word of mouth, a lot of people came to see it for themselves and admired it. Local people helped improve the environment around the ubosot to make it clean, planting trees and trimming the grass or clearing away weeds and thickets. The area around the water well was remodeled.
More and more visitors visited the temple. The landscaping enhances the beauty of the ubosot making it shine splendidly like a gem in the Buddhist place. All of these marked their strong love and awareness of the value of the local treasure and heritage, which will instill in their conscience to join hands in conserving their customs and culture as well as the national art to extend and carry on its value and existence for as long as possible.
