Abstract
Northern Thai Traditional Music Teachers’s Identities : The Study Case of Manop Yarana, Un-ruean Hongtong, and Bunying Kanthawong
The aims of this research were to investigate; Northern Thai traditional music teachers (NTMT)’s identities, the factors that influence NTMTs’ identities, and NTMTs’ identity development. A phenomenological approach was chosen for the study. Three participants; Manop Yarana, Un-ruean Hongtong, and Bunying Kanthawong, were selected by purposeful sampling concept. The research results found that NTMTs’ identities are; NTMTs know their expertise or professional knowledge, NTMTs understand objectives and process of learning obviously, NTMTs have self-awareness as music teacher, creator and conserver, and NTMTs have a point of view about modern music education in Thai society. The factors that influence NTMTs’ identities are; family, the cultural context of music and performing art, music teachers, musicians, friends, pupils, and teaching experience. NTMTs’ identity development is a complicate and gradualprocess, but the process may be divided successively; absorption of culture, imitation, musician identity development, music creation, and music teacher identity development.
