Main Article Content
Abstract
This article is part of a research project on the creation of a performance based on the legend of “Kad Muang Phi” to support eco-tourism in Si Dong Yen Subdistrict, Chai Prakan District, Chiang Mai Province. The project involves creating a contemporary Lanna-style dance performance that fully incorporates various performance elements. The successful stage performance was well-received, aligning with the objectives set by the author. These objectives included
creating a creative dance performance inspired by the legend of the eco-tourism site “Kad Muang Phi” in Si Dong Yen Subdistrict, Chai Prakan District, Chiang Mai Province, and promoting this tourist site through the creative performance “Kad Muang Phi.” In this creation, the author applied knowledge of semiotic design to convey layered meanings in the dance performance. This is crucial because incorporating semiotics into the performance enhances the value of the work. It allows the audience to think, analyze, and appreciate the complex communication conveyed through the symbols created by the artist. Semiotics or symbols function to convey meanings beyond what is visibly apparent and more than what they inherently represent.
In the creation of the “Kad Muang Phi”, symbols were inserted by specifying signs to add dimension and value to the work. By leaving signs for the audience, there will be an opportunity to process, follow along, and imagine. In this article, the author discusses sign design in two important representational elements which are costume design and gesture design. Thus, the audience can imagine the meaning of the performance and adds value and meaning for this “Kad Muang Phi” creative work.
