Guideline for finding Exposure Values in Studio Photography with Flash Strobes from Color and Luminosity Data
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research article presents the study of a guideline for finding exposure values in studio photography with flash strobe from color and luminosity data within a digital photographic file read by a computer program. The study began with the review of the relevant literature. The acquired knowledge was then used to create a method and conduct an experiment to study the potential of using color and luminosity values to determine exposure value from flash strobe compared to the light metering device. After that, the results obtained from the experiment were used to create a guideline and conveyed to a sample group to use in the trial. Finally, in-depth interviews were conducted among the sample group to learn their opinions, problems, and suggestions that would be used to further develop the guideline.
The results from the study show that when applied to the related exposure evaluation method, the color and luminosity values on digital photographs have the potential to determine the exposure value from a flash strobe with similar accuracy to the light metering device. Once the potential was learned, a guideline was created for the studio photography workflow which also includes a luminance scale chart corresponding to color and luminosity value that would aid users to determine the exposure value of flash-induced luminosity. The guideline was conveyed to the sample group for trial and in-depth interviews were conducted afterward. From the interviews, it was agreed that although the guideline may not be as convenient and fast as a light meter and the user needs to have knowledge in many areas, it is usable and is especially useful in some cases. In addition, the sample group gave suggestions that could be used to further develop the guidelines which will be discussed in the content of the article.
